Aces Up Solitaire
Introduction to Aces Up
Aces Up is a fast-paced, addictive solitaire game that earned the nickname "Idiot's Delight" because of its simple rules and the difficulty of winning. Unlike complex strategy games like Freecell or Spider Solitaire, Aces Up is perfect for a quick break where luck plays a significant role. The goal is straightforward but challenging: discard every card until only the four Aces remain on the table.
Game Setup
The game uses a standard 52-card deck. After shuffling, the initial setup is very quick:
- Four cards are dealt face up in a horizontal row, forming the start of the four columns (the tableau).
- The remaining cards are placed face down to form the stock pile.
- A discard pile will be created during the game to store removed cards.
How to Play
The objective is to move all cards to the discard pile except for the four Aces. In this game, Aces are considered the highest-ranking cards.
- Discarding: Look at the top card of each of the four columns. If there are two or more cards of the same suit, you can discard the card with the lower value. For example, if you see a 6 of Hearts and a 10 of Hearts, you can click the 6 to remove it.
- Dealing: When no more cards can be discarded from the current layout, deal four new cards from the stock pile—one onto each column.
- Empty Columns: If a column becomes completely empty, you can move the top card of any other column into that space. This is a crucial tactical move to uncover buried cards.
- Winning: You win if, after the entire stock has been dealt and all possible moves are made, only the four Aces are left standing.
Tips and Strategies for Winning
While Aces Up depends heavily on the luck of the draw, these tips will help you improve your win rate:
- Prioritize Empty Spaces: Never leave a space empty if you can move a card into it, especially if that card is blocking others.
- The Power of Aces: Try to get an Ace into an empty column as soon as possible. Since an Ace cannot be discarded, it acts as a safe foundation for that column.
- Think Before You Click: If you have multiple cards of the same suit visible, think about which one you should discard first. While it usually doesn't matter, uncovering a specific card might be more beneficial than another.
- Don't Get Discouraged: The odds of winning Aces Up are statistically low. If you find it too frustrating, you might enjoy the more manageable challenges of Klondike or the unique mechanics of Monte Carlo.
